A Fine St. Patrick's Day

This is a charming tale explaining why we wear green on St. Patrick's Day with the underlying message of the strength in community, perseverance and kindness to those in need.

Two rival towns compete annually for the best St. Patrick's Day decorations. The townspeople of Tralee never won and each year vowed that the next year would be the 'one'. The people of Trahlah, on the other hand, gloated every year over their victory. One year, a young Traleean girl suggested that they paint the entire town limerick green! The Traleeans got busy painting everything in sight a beautiful green color. The people of Trahlah were putting sparkling shamrocks everywhere-they were too busy to help the odd man who needed help getting his cow unstuck from the mud. So, the man walked to Tralee to get help. The people of Tralee hesitated-if they stopped to help him, they would not finish the painting and they would lose again. But help they did and when the cow was freed from the mud they were all were so tired they just flopped into bed. When they awoke the next day they were shocked to see their town totally painted green. They knew the little man must have finished the job, but when they went to invite him to dinner all they found was a solid gold cowbell. They decided to invite the townspeople of Trahlah celebrate Tralee's first St. Patrick Day decorating win. And every year, thereafter, both towns were painted green for St. Patrick's Day!
